OLD MAU
The universe takes notice
when Old Mau
passes by.
Venerable at twenty-one,
even the strays
don’t come near him.
Scrappy Dan
goes the other way—
No scraps today.
Old Mau chases dogs
for sport,
sinking claws
into unsuspecting
poochie noses
too close to his fence,
too curious.
Old Mau
crosses the garden,
stalks the unkempt lawn:
the beetle,
the moth,
the mouse,
the mole.
Old Mau
blinks green eyes
at the sunshine;
King of the World.
Cat poem by Mollie Hunt, April 2018
It is a charming poem about an aged cat, who is indeed the king of his world.
